It’s been only 5 years since Sony introduced the PlayStation Portable. Ever since then, Sony’s hand held has witnessed plenty of ups and downs. March 24th, 2005 was the day when the Psp ended up being released and since then it easily has sold near to sixty million units worldwide. So exactly what did Sony have to say regarding this accomplishment? Over at the official PlayStation Site , John Koller, the Overseer connected with hardware marketing had the following to say:

“March 24, 2005 will always be known in PlayStation history as the day we debuted the PSP systemin North America. At midnight launches across the country, hundreds of you waited with great anticipation in lines at local retail stores for the PSP system. With its best-in-class, 4.3 inch high-resolution LCD display, vast library of software titles and built-in wireless communications, the PSP system was the first integrated handheld entertainment system to introduce console-quality gaming and comprehensive entertainment capabilities to the portable market. Half a decade later, PSP is still going strong and continues to provide the best portable gaming experience and offer incredible value to consumers.”

“With more than 520 PSP software titles, including God of War: Chains of Olympus, Gran Turismo,LittleBigPlanet, Resistance: Retribution, and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo as well as more than 20,000 movies and TV episodes, “minis,” digital comics, original programming, and more than 300 games available on the PlayStation Network, it’s easy to understand why you have grown to love your PSP.”

“The PSP platform has seen tremendous growth in the last five years and we have you to thank. We’re extremely grateful for your enthusiasm and feedback because without it, the PSP system wouldn’t be what it is today. We look forward to providing you with more great content and many more years of portable entertainment in 2010 and beyond.”

On behalf of PSP Blender, Happy fifth Anniversary PSP!

Sony kicked off its CES conference today with some big news highlighting several planned BD-Live interactive features coming to Blu-ray in 2008. During an interactive demo on the show floor, Sony revealed a series of interactive features currently planned for the BD-Live networking capabilities.

The first feature previewed was one that would allow viewers to send ringtones to their personal mobile phones, including content from the movie itself. Viewers could extract lines of dialogue from the movie or other audio clips.

More excitingly revealed was that Sony is planning select Blu-ray titles that will include a version of the film encoded for the PSP, thus making the film portable. However, Sony didn’t announce a planned release date or titles that will include this new feature.

Stay tuned for more details on this hot new development.

Stuff magazine is running a rumor item on the possibility of an upcoming Aibo, the robotic dog, working with the Playstation Portable and Playstation 3. The rumor goes that the Sony Aibo PS, as they call it, is being resuscitated by Sony’s Playstation division in an attempt to "bolster the PS3′s arsenal."

The Aibo PS will appear with its own avatar within Home and react in the real world as he does in the PS3′s upcoming interactive environment, according to the article. The rumor article goes on to say that you will be able to download new personalities for the dog from the Playstation Network and that the dog will be fully controllable using a PSP via WiFi. The dog’s head camera will send a real world vid feed to the PSP’s screen as well. The Dpad will control walking movement and the four main buttons will deal with head movement, which seems odd.

The Stuff folks rate this rumor as having a 53 percent probability. Seems like a cool concept, but I wonder if there’s the market for it to hit the real world. Who am I kidding? A remote control dog that can send live video from its head, sign me up for a baker’s dozen.

Hackers seem to do some amazing things and this is a perfect example of that. Manhunt 2 was originally given an Adults Only rating by the ESRB in North America, which kept it from releasing in July on the PSP, PS2, and Nintendo Wii platforms.

Rockstar had to go back to the drawing board and re-work the game to the point where they had to dumd down the violence a bit so that they were allowed to release it. They did so an yesterday on Halloween the game launched finally on the PSP, PS2, and Wii.

Now hackers have apparently found a way to remove all of the censoring by Rockstar. This reverts Manhunt 2 back to its state as an Adults Only game which will please many gamers who were not happy that the game was dumbed down a bit.

The new PSP slims have been on the market for less than 24 hours but, if we’ve learned one thing from the Internet, it is that the hackers move quickly. Many have feared that the hardware update may make hacking much harder, but the firmware has already been dumped, and it has been confirmed that the system has 66MB of NAND memory, double that of the original PSP.

While Sony is mainly touting the extra memory as a way of decreasing load times in new and existing games, it will have the bonus side effect of giving hackers and homebrew coders much more memory to work with. Will we begin to see homebrew games taking advantage of the extra headroom and requiring the new PSP to play? Perhaps.

The hacking world moves fast. We’ll try to keep up.
